In 2016-2017 we continue with our retreat-based confirmation program. Our overarching theme is BElonging, BEli(e)ving, BEloving. Much of the first year centered on the Bible, the sacraments, and worship. The second year we focus on Luther’s Small Catechism. Will there be some memorization? Might be! Will we explore present day issues in light of what we learn in the catechism? You betcha! Will we give you some tools to study The Lord’s Prayer, The Creed, and The Ten Commandments as a family (as you promised at their baptism!)? Yes, that is most certainly the goal.
Ideas that drive our pastoral thinking: Faith is caught more than taught. Passing on the faith happens at home. The church’s role is to support and provide resources for families.
Dates for 2016-2017:
Saturday, September 24, 2016 — FAMILY Confirmation @ The Farm 10-3 (9-4 with travel time)
Parents and siblings, too! A day of fun and learning at Dan and Mary’s farm near River Falls, WI. We’ll have a potluck, some discussion and planning, and CONFIRMATION OLYMPICS! Your summer training schedules will be provided soon! At least one parent needs to come with your confirmand and we’d love to have the whole family attend (and compete!).
Saturday, November 19, 2016 — Confirmation Retreat @ Pastor Melanie’s House (St. Louis Park) 10-3.
The focus of this retreat is Prayer—and specifically, the Lord’s Prayer.
Saturday, January 21, 2017 — Confirmation Retreat @ Grace 10-3
The focus of this retreat is The Ten Commandments—in all of their trickiness, nuance, and complexity! We will dig into the Small Catechism here! And wrestle with modern issues in light of the ancient commands.
Saturday, April 29, 2017 — Confirmation Retreat @ The Farm 10-3 (9-4 with travel time)
This retreat will focus on the Apostle’s Creed and what we believe to be “most certainly true.”
The above is the “Core Curriculum” of our confirmation programming. Our texts are the Bible, The Small Catechism and Manna & Mercy. There will be “electives” and “extra curriculars” aplenty — service opportunities, perhaps an occasional book group, worship attendance/leadership expectations, etc. We will talk more about this at the Family Retreat in September.
Looking WAY Ahead….
Final Retreat: September 22 & 23, 2017 — a Friday to Saturday overnight @ The Farm
CONFIRMATION SUNDAY: October 29, 2017 at 10:30 am!
This is the 500th anniversary of the Reformation! An auspicious day on which to be confirmed!
